I began my martial arts journey at the age of 6, initially training in Kick Boxing under Jeff Fitzgerald and Shotokan Karate under Mike O'Brien. Although my early memories of training are sparse, I recall learning to skip rope and often hiding in the bathroom to avoid classes, as I was too young to appreciate the value of martial arts at the time.
In 1997, I started training in Tang Soo Do under Des Galligan. Despite facing challenges related to my background as half Irish and half Hong Kong Chinese, and a hip condition which affected my confidence and physical abilities, I persevered. My focus on perfecting technique over physical ability helped me progress in my training.
A significant setback occurred in January 2002 when I underwent a hip operation, leading to a two-year hiatus from Tang Soo Do. During this time, I struggled with physical limitations but returned to martial arts with a renewed determination to improve my physical state. My stubbornness and desire not to be left behind fueled my recovery and progress.
I have undergone seven operations, including limb lengthening and hip reconstruction, which have significantly impacted my martial arts journey. Despite these challenges, I achieved my 1st Dan in May 2007 and continued to advance under the guidance of Grand Master Des Galligan. From Grand Master Galligan, I learned that traditional martial arts don't have to be overly serious or too strict. I incorporate humor into my teaching to balance the discipline of traditional karate and Tang Soo Do. In May 2014, I graded for and achieved my Master Grade 4th Dan.
In August 2017, I founded Kwan Martial Arts Academy, seizing the opportunity to step out on my own and build a career. The academy has become a place where I can provide the best instruction possible while fostering a supportive and enjoyable learning environment.
One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing my long-term students grow into young adults and instructors. I take great pride in their development and aim to nurture future instructors who can continue to train and spread Tang Soo Do.
At Kwan Martial Arts Academy, I balance traditional Tang Soo Do techniques with modern training methods. I maintain the core essence of Tang Soo Do while adapting or discarding techniques that simply don't work or apply in real-world scenarios. I emphasize the "Art" side of martial arts, using the phrase "glass house scenario" to describe techniques that are great in theory but may not hold up under pressure.
Looking ahead, I aim to mentor future instructors who can uphold my teachings and contribute to the ongoing success of Kwan Martial Arts Academy.
